In Mongolia, a so called dzud poses a very frequent and probably the most striking type of natural hazard. It is caused by multiple factors of draught summer followed by severe winter with extremely low temperatures and usually a lot of snow which prevents animals from reaching the grass. All these factors together result in huge losses in herds, main source of subsistence of majority of rural Mongolians. Therefore, each dzud means a possibility of acute food insecurity and loss of livelihoods.

Somalia is since 1990 described as a collapsed state; the country is affected by long-standing internal armed conflict and balancing on the edge of collapse. Dysfunctional state structures, political instability, climate change, prolonged drought and lack of investment in agriculture resulted in some parts of the country to a humanitarian disaster, leaving thousands of people dependent on foreign aid.
Promoting women in Tambacounda
Since 2006, Caritas CR was cooperating with Caritas Austria on the project Profemme, implemented in the southwest of Senegal. This project aimed at the emancipation of women and Caritas CR endorsed the goal of this project by facilitating access to safe drinking water. The presence of wells in the village means for women a significant time saving contributes to the reduction of the incidence of infectious diseases and allows cropping activities in the dry season.

Livelihood restoration in earthquake-affected areas, Haiti
Restoring the livelihoods of the Haitian population affected by the earthquake that struck the country in 2010 is one the fundamental prerequisites for fighting against poverty and securing a dignified life for the Haitian people. Through supporting farmers, livestock breeders and small businesses in the rural area of Leogane, Caritas CR is trying to secure better living conditions of local inhabitants.
Participation and Development of Local Self-Government Capacities
The purpose of the project „Promotion of Civic Participation and Development of Local Self-Government Capacities in Samtskhe/Javakheti“ is enhancement of civic participation in public life in rural areas of Georgia. In broader and long-term perspective the project’s ambition resides in a positive impact on increase of standard of living of inhabitants in the region.

Kindergartens, originally founded and run by Caritas CR, were, in accordance with a long-term plan, handed over to the local partner in 2007. Currently, approximately 1200 children attend 21 fully functioning and equipped kindergartens. Chechen state administrations, parents of children and also Caritas CR financially contribute to their run. From the funds of the Three Kings collection are covered expenses for methodological materials, writing materials and toys.

The project aims to increase responsibility and a willingness to find real solutions to issues of Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) among CCR's professionals and the other interested professionals and wider public.

The project is concerned with support of small businesses in mountain areas of Nozhay Yurt region by means of material grants. The project also takes into account business activities’ usefulness in individual villages. Among the business activities belong breeding of cows for milk, bulls for meat, goats and sheep breeding, farming tools production, car repairs, tailor’s shop, bakery, grocery, greenhouse vegetable growing etc. Support was granted to 500 persons.

Improving food security of herders’ population dependent on animal husbandry and living in areas highly susceptible to dzud phenomenon
In Mongolia 1/3 of the population is nomadic and animal husbandry is often the sole source of employment in rural areas. The natural catastrophe called dzud resulted last winter in the loss of more than 7.2 million livestock. One of the most affected provinces is Ovorkhangai, where CCR helps herders to better prepare for the coming winter and build their capacities in proper disaster preparedness and key aspects of animal husbandry and pasture management.
Early detection support and prevention of cancer in women in the Samegrelo and Shida Kartli regions

Rural Development Project
The purpose of the project is Chechen communities’ development with local inhabitants’ active participation and material aid. Village inhabitants associated in small village committees engage themselves in seeking problems and deficiencies in individual villages and their solution. Material and equipment is purchased by Caritas CR, all the works is then done for free by local inhabitants.
